Playing in the snow can be a fun and adventurous activity- making snowmen, having snowball fights, building igloos (my favorite), and sledding. However, shoveling snow is never fun and can sometimes be dangerous. Every year, I hear stories of people having heart attacks or going into cardiac arrest while shoveling.
There can be many reasons why this happens: a combination of strenuous physical activity for people not used to it, underlying disease, cold weather, and the overall stress of the situation. Whatever the cause, knowing the warning signs, the chain of survival, the role of aspirin in early heart attack care, and CPR can save a life.
Get trained. Get educated. Go to your physician. Get off the couch, eat good, healthy food, and enjoy the snow. Be safe!
